Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder defends Planned Parenthood decision

The past week wasn’t pretty for Susan G. Komen. It is a reminder of the importance of keeping your nonprofit and your cause marketing campaigns away from politics. It also illustrates the power of Social Media in changing major decisions. The rapid fire from blogs, Tweets and Facebook are able to radically alter decision making. In addition to Komen, I’ve seen this impact on the Gap’s retreat from its new logo and the Obama Administration’s back down of the Christmas tree checkoff (which was branded as Obama’s tax on Christmas). While you can’t avoid controversy, you need to be careful of your choices and have a crisis communications plan in place.
