Three Nonprofit Predictions For 2011
The new year brings optimism and opportunity. It can also bring some uncertainty and anxiety about the future. I don't have a crystal ball, but I have a lot of data and observations from around the nonprofit sector. Here are three predictions for 2011: Giving Gets Better The global recession certainly had a heavy impact on the nonprofit sector. Giving to organizations for the past three years has taken a hit from the ...  More

Measuring Progress and Achievement: Help Your Nonprofit Board Decide What Questions Should Be Asked
Boards have four areas of responsibility. One of those areas is monitoring activity. Often the boards of smaller organizations focus on asking questions like: What did the executive do since the last meeting? How did the executive spend the money? Where does the organization have problems? Those are operational questions. The executive should be handling them. In our opinion, if the board truly needs to ask those questions there is indication ...  More

Major Gifts And Planned Giving
Every nonprofit wants to receive a major gift or a bequest. Those special gifts can come as a surprise and it is a welcome surprise when it happens. They can also be cultivated. The cultivation process is straightforward but takes time and must be intentional. In other words, major gifts and bequests are earned. The first step is to look in the donor base for indicators that there are donors who might be inclined to make a major gift or ...  More

Why Are You Having A Fundraising Auction? (Tell The Truth.)
Imagine that you’ve agreed to chair the fundraising auction for a charity in your town. You've heard that many benefit auctioneers are booked months in advance, so you've decided to call a few today to get an idea of their services. Stop. Don't pick up the phone until you're clear about one point. You'll save yourself and the charity auctioneer a lot of time if you answer this question first. Why are you really holding ...  More

What’s Really Holding Us Back
For decades, nonprofit effectiveness has been judged by low administrative costs (read: spending as little as possible on accounting, human resources and information technology.) This standard of excellence has been codified by sector leaders like Charity Navigator, the United Way and the BBB whose ratings and rankings perpetuate the myth that low admin costs = better programs. Nonprofits have responded as expected – burying administrative ...  More

5 Reasons Why Nobody Cares About Your Nonprofit
Yes, it's true. They don't care. It's not their fault. Here's why they don't care and what to do about it. 1. They haven't heard of your nonprofit. In order to care, they must know your organization. It's the first step to the relationship. If you want them to care, start by building awareness. Then follow it up with more direct outreach efforts. Don't be tempted to communicate to all audiences. ...  More

The Case For Social Media In Non-Profit Strategy
With ongoing technical advances, opportunities available over the internet, and external economic factors, many companies have shifted their marketing efforts towards social media. Social media is an inexpensive and effective way to market a cause to an audience. While many companies use social media and internet exposure to advance sales, social media is a marketing medium that can apply to all causes, including non-profit organizations. When ...  More

The Real ROI For Nonprofit Marketing
The stock market is volatile - no question about it - and this volatility has many people worried about the future. Since 2008, I’ve heard hundreds, if not thousands of stories about people going back to work or postponing their retirement plans because they have lost most, if not all, of their investments. However, if you review the last year (just 2 short years after the crash) things are looking a lot sunnier. Most stock-fund categories ...  More

Private-Sector Business Lessons Help American Red Cross During Tough Economy
Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern insists model business practices from the private sector have helped the American Red Cross weather a difficult economy and enabled the non-profit to focus more keenly on its mission. McGovern, a former executive at Fidelity Investments and AT&T, said other nonprofit organizations can learn from the private sector, and, conversely, for-profit businesses can learn from the nonprofit sector. Confronted ...  More
